Why is it humming?

I have 4 speakers hooked into an amp. It all worked great until today when it started making a loud humming noise, no matter what the song is. I have switched wires around and it still did nothing. It isnt making noise when the stereo is powered off, but when its turned down and while playing music. Please help! Thanks

That amp in that location could often hum when the weather got cold; it hummed constantly in winter, regardless of what was plugged into it (or wasn't). While rewiring the house, I noticed that the power chase to the upstairs ran up the wall right behind where that amp was. The upstairs bathroom had an electric baseboard heater in it; shutting off that heater resolved the hum issue, as did moving the amp to a different location in the house. Lesson learned.
