Is it possible to turn a surround sound home audio sub woofer into a sub for my car? ?

And if it is, how do i do it?

Yes. You need to know the power handling of it. Also it will most likely be 8 ohm. Most car amps are rated for 4 ohm but an 8 ohm sub will work just fine but the power will be cut in half. So you 'll need an amp that's twice the power. Example: Say it's a 100 watt sub @ 8 ohm. You'd need a 200 watt @ 4 ohm amp.

In addition to Sparky's advise, if it is a self amplified sub like most home surround subs are then all you need is a power inverter of the proper wattage to run the sub off of.

just another quick 2 cents, it also depends a little on the sub/how u r gonna set it up. i have seen a lot of home audio centers set up using an infinite baffel setup. these are unique (sort of) subs that cant really be installed in sealed or ported setups.
