How to control my surround sound?

Hey, i just got a surround sound system, only problem is that it was just the speakers and subwoofer, nothing to control any of it. I was wondering..if i step down 120VAC to 12VAC and use diodes to turn the AC into DC, would i be able to succesfuly use a car stereo to control it? with that i'll get the Front/Back fade, Left/Right Balance, and the Bass/Treble control, i'll also get the radio, and depending what sero i use i can input from my tv/dvd/ cd/ etc....think it'll work? ooh, so just hooking up the speakers won't work"? they all need amplifiers?

You can control is with your washer washer machine knob if you connect it properly... Get a cheap a/v/ reciever - there are some out there for under $100. Car radio does not have Dolby/DTS processors, does not have enough (if any) inputs, etc... Surround sound is not 5 speakers and a sub - it is a digital signal processing system, 5 (or 6) amplifiers and 5 (or six) speakers.
