Do I need a car amplifier? If not, what can I use?

I recently bought 2 sets of speakers. One is the Polk DB651 6.5 and the other is the Polk MM691 6x9. I will be running both with the 6x9 in the front. I will be running them on the Alpine CDA-105 deck. I know that the 6.5's have an impedance of 4 OHMS and the 6x9's have an impedance of 2.7 OHMS. I know that the lower OHMS speakers usually need an amplifier to sound good, but will they still sound well if i do not run an amplifier? Also, someone told me about a pre-amp. Is is possible to use one of these to power just the front speakers to make them sound good? I am a little new to the car audio stuff. How can I get the lower OHMS speakers to still sound good without buying and installing a $200 amp?

sound good? your speakers will sound good as long as they are not popped or blown...an amplifier just gives your speakers more power than the head unit (making them louder), and as long as the power from amp's channels do not exceed the rated RMS of the speakers', then you do not have to worry about blowing them. the pre-amp output is simply the power that your head unit will give (typically its ~52Wx4, meaning it can power 4 speakers at 52watts). without an amp, your speakers can only put out 52 watts each, regardless of their power ratings. the only difference in output is that the one with the higher impedence will not play as loud as the 2.7ohm speakers (this is why its typically a rule of thumb to get the same power speakers with same impedence for both the front and the back). so to answer your questions simply, NO you do not need an amplifier unless you want to efficiently power your speakers, and as long as you do not exceed the speakers' power ratings, then your speakers will still sound the way they are designed.
