Connecting Phone/Mp3 directly to an amplifier. ?

Is it possible to connect a phone directly to a amp. I have just brought a pair of Infinity Kappa 693.9i Speakers and was thinking as I dont use the radio I can just get a audio jack to RCA plug that into the amp, that would save me from buying a deck. From what I have read so far this will not work but I dont understand why. Does the wattage from the phone not enough wattage to power the amp? I have a JVC amp at home with input rca's in the front this seems to work using my phone. Otherwise I may have to ditch an amp altogther and get a resonable deck but these are generally only 50w/pc is this enogh for the speakers which I think are rated 110. This is just for my surf car so I dont want to spend too much on it. Any advise Thanks in advance.
