Car audio with surround sound?

I've got some CD's and DVD's with DTS 5.1 music on them, and they sound great on my DVD setup at home. I want to play them in my car (which really seems the perfect place to play surround music), so obviously a regular Car DVD player would work. They're a bit expensive though, and I'm not really interested in paying for a flatscreen for my car. I just want a cheap DD/DTS 5.1-capable car audio unit. Is there such a thing? I mean, it doesn't seem far-fetched to build one myself from a small PC since they all come with surround sound nowadays. But I'd rather pay for something that just works.

You have a good theory there, but here's the problem: Although a car environment can be ideal for listening to music, it is usually a lousy place for surround sound. This is because few CDs are actually recorded in surround sound, so the receiver just synthesizes the sound, AND there is not enough distance between the right, left and center channels to get good separation. So , instead of hearing good stereo sound, what you'll hear is mostly center channel, making you music sound like mono. I had an expesive car with 11 speakers and Bose surround sound. I am glad I got rid of it because the sound sucked (in most cases). In my opinion, in a car, GOOD stereo is th ebest way to go.

There is a module out there that will allow you to do 5.1 in your car. Alpine makes it, its a PXAH701 processor. It will work with most of the higher end Alpine decks. To my knowledge, there isn't a "cheap" solution but it is very attainable. You will also need to add a center channel, an amp or two, subwoofer, and possibly change out all your speakers. Most stock speakers will not reproduce music all that well. If you have any more questions, please feel free to email me. I have been in this business for over 10 years, use my knowledge.
