With an after-market deck, "iPod Ready" usually means that the manufacturer offers an add-on unit which lets you control and charge the iPod through the head unit. It doesn't necessarily mean that the unit supports other MP3 player types, or even allows an iPod hookup without an additional purchase.
If you want to hear an MP3 device through the head unit, the feature to look for is "auxiliary input". Most new decks offer aux inputs, or allow one to be added with an add-on module. You can find decks with aux inputs on the front or on the rear. This allows you to hear your MP3 files through the car's speakers, but you'll still have to select tracks through the MP3 device itself (not through the head unit controls, as with an iPod).
